How to sell digital products on your Squarespace website: a step-by-step guide
If you read our last post about passive income, you know that selling digital products isn’t really “set it and forget it.” There’s a lot of planning and consistently showing up to market your business that goes along side it. But Squarespace makes the technical side pretty easy, you just need a clear plan for setting up your shop.
Here’s how to do it, step by step, without feeling overwhelmed.
Step 1: Decide what type of digital product to sell
Before adding anything, be clear on what your product is and how it fits your business.
Some examples for service-based businesses:
Templates or checklists that prep clients for working with you
Guides or e-books that solve a small but specific problem
Workbooks or planners your audience can use immediately
For more inspiration, check out last weeks blog post about passive income which is full of ideas. Once you know what you’re selling and you’ve created your digital product, you’re ready to move to Squarespace.
Step 2: Add a “Store” page to your site
Squarespace makes this easy:
Go to Pages in your dashboard
Click the + to add a page
A pop-up panel will appear, scroll down to the section called ‘Sell’ and click products.
Choose your favourite shop layout and click on it to add it (don’t worry you can edit the styles add add extra sections later).
Give it a name that clearly describes what you’re selling.
This page will be the home for all your digital products.
Step 3: Add your first digital product
Inside your Store page, click Add Product
Choose a ‘Download’ product
Enter your product title
Add a description that clearly explains what the product does
Upload your file (PDF, ZIP, or image-based guides)
Set a price
You can also use the additional information area to add more information about the product below the main shopping area. It’s a great space to add additional FAQs and sales points.
Pro tip: Add a preview image or screenshot so people know what they’re getting. Squarespace will show this on your store and product page.
Step 4: Set up delivery and confirmation
Squarespace automatically delivers digital products after purchase. This step ensures customers get their products without you having to manually send files.
Tips:
Add a short thank-you message in the confirmation email
Test the checkout to make sure downloads work
Step 5: organise your products
Even if you only have one product now, it’s good to plan for more.
Use categories if you plan to sell multiple products (like “Guides” or “Templates”)
Arrange products in the order you want visitors to see them
Use clear, searchable titles
This keeps your store clean and makes shopping easy.
Step 6: Make your store easy to find
A digital product can’t sell if no one can find it.
Add your store to your main navigation
Link to it from relevant pages like Services or Blog posts
Include a button on your homepage for your shop or free resources
Pro tip: Your homepage can feature one or two products as a “highlight” section without overwhelming visitors.
Step 7: Promote your products
‘Passive’ products actually need a lot of marketing and even the best setup won’t sell itself. That’s why you should use content to guide people, for example:
Blog posts that relate to the product topic
Email newsletters with helpful tips and product links
Social media posts showing how people can use the product
Paid ads as an next step once you’ve built out your organic marketing.
Think of your product as a helpful step that leads to your paid services, not just a one-off sale.
Step 8: Track performance and update
Squarespace gives basic sales and traffic data for your store, you can:
See which products are popular
Note where most of your traffic is coming from - for example if you’re getting a lot of visitors from Pinterest, then you can focus on that platform more.
Update files, descriptions, and pricing as needed
A little tracking goes a long way to making sure your digital product shop actually works and if anything needs improving.
